Adaptation of the design process to the Client’s requirements
The OrgCon design process can be tailored to meet the specific situations and needs of the client in order to achieve a better design solution.
- There are many situations where the OrgCon design process is highly appropriate a.o.:
- Diagnosis of the current strategic situation
- Evaluation of a new Organizational Design
- Evaluation of design possibilities in a merger situation
- Analyzing potential responses to a new market environment (changes in the competition etc.)
- Review of the consequences of introducing new systems or procedures
- The purpose of the analysis determines who should be on the design team. The CEO may want to explore alternatives before discussions with the existing organization. A staff group may want to explore alternatives and possibilities; the staff may also want to validate an existing proposal for change. Alternatively, the design team may choose to use the OrgCon tool for facilitation in a group process, where they discuss the inputs and agree on a common input profile for analysis. Furthermore, OrgCon supported processes may be used to generate a common understanding of the strategic situation of the organization.
- The presentation is usually to the design team, but it can also be presented to other individuals or groups who are interested in the design result.
- Here, the OrgCon interview process can vary depending upon the purpose as suggested in section II. It is important that this phase matches the purpose, whether it is confirmation by a team, exploration by a single executive, or agreement by a group. In the merger situation individuals from the merged units should be interviewed to diagnose the situation before the merger as well as scenarios after the merger.
- The team and the data drive the number of analyses to be done. For a number of individual input profiles, the analyses should be individual, comparative and then integrative for a common understanding and action. For an individual who wants a better understanding of the possibilities, the analyses are likely to involve a number of sensitivity analyses driven by the individual’s questions. Similarly, a confirmation study would start with a proposed solution and examine it vis-à-vis other possibilities.
- The plenary session is with the design team. It is not advisable to run a plenary session with a group or an individual only being involved at this last stage. The OrgCon process is an active, executive process.
- The OrgCon design process is quite versatile and it can be adapted to the particular approach that meets the needs of the client. However, it is a process which requires executive involvement throughout.
